Patience...with pizza on the side
There had been a lot of
twitter buzz about La Taverna Wednesday pizza deal for the price of N2,500; so
I buzzed my faithful friend and fellow foodie and we decided for the following Wednesday
after work. Wednesday arrived and we headed for the pizza place located on the
5th floor of Statement Hotel, 1st Avenue, Opposite Adamawa House, Central Area, Abuja, close to Abia House.
There were two sitting areas,
indoor and outdoor. When we got in, we noticed more than a few couples wining
and dining, it felt like couples’ night out. The décor was quite nice, I liked
the wooden furniture and the wine cellar sitting pretty in a corner. We were
seated for a humble minute or two when the waiter handed us the menu.
They have a variety of pizza
options on their menu so we were indecisive at first but we finally decided to
try the Lagos Street pizza, mostly because the name and description were really
interesting; it had tomato sauce, chicken suya, cheese and pineapple in it. We
ordered water, which arrived on time but omo! The pizza took forever; I mean,
it felt like forever and they didn’t even give us appetizers on the house to
pacify our tumultuous hunger.
After waiting for about 20
minutes, I had to ask the waiter how long it was going to take. To which he
replied “10 to 15 minutes”. LOL. My
friend was like ‘10-15 minutes more? We have been waiting 20 minutes already.’
The guy didn’t apologize and his defense was that the oven could take only 6
pizzas at a time….blah! blah!! blah!!! I was surprised because I’d assume
they’d have more than one oven to avoid situations like this and I was annoyed
because he didn’t see the need to update us on the progress of our order until
we enquired. Na so we for wait tire.
While we were still waiting, I
watched as he prepared a customer’s smoothie, my guy finished preparing it and
was just chilling and sipping whatever he was sipping, before it dawned on him
to proceed to the customer’s table. The pizza finally arrived 10 minutes later,
after a total waiting time of 30 minutes. It had a thin crust and I couldn’t
help but wonder if that was because of their Wednesday deal. We weren’t given
the option to choose between thin or thick crust so I guess anything you see,
take am like that. LOL.
The crust may have been thin
but the taste was superb; it was one of the best pizzas I have had in recent
times. The ingredients were blended perfectly; it was just yummy. The pizza
compensated for the waiting time and, may be a little, for the waiter’s
nonchalant attitude. Plus there was no VAT/ service charge, is this becoming a
thing?!
Ambience: 8/10
Price: 9/10
(because of the Wednesday deal)
Food: 9/10
